One of the reasons for the economical pricing of India's ready made garments and apparels is the availability of highly skilled, cheap labor in the country. The superiority of India's Garment Industry has been acknowledged in the National Textile Policy (NTP) of India 2000. Having realized the tremendous growth potential of this sector there is a proposal in the NTP for taking the Indian Garment Industry out of the SSI reservation list.
The first article in this section is titled “Indian Textile and Garment Industry: Roadmap to Enhance its Competitiveness” by Shobana Anand. According to the author, there are certain macro and micro measures that need to be taken to enhance the competitiveness of the Indian garment industry. The article covers the demand-supply dynamics in the textile and garment industry and also emphasizes on the steps that can be taken at the government, industry and firm level to compete after the phasing out of the quota system. Government can rationalise duties, simplify and regulate controls, dismantle archaic labour policies, provide affordable finance, etc. The steps are also required to be taken at the industry level. These steps include making strategic linkages, creating common infrastructure pools, creating brand India, etc. At the firm level, individual firms should identify their core competencies, restructure, take innovative financial measures and follow professional management practices.
